Mumbai University Introduction
The University of Mumbai earlier known as University of Bombay it is one of the oldest University in India. Government of Maharashtra published Government Gazette notification in 1996 September 4th university name changed from “University of Bombay” to “University of Mumbai”. The university awarded 5 star status in 2001 and A++ grade status in 2017 by NAAC.University of Mumbai Vision

University of Mumbai is one of the largest university systems in the world, it had 711 affiliated colleges. University of Bombay was established in 18 July 1857 by Jagannath Shankarseth, Bhau Daji and John Wilson after presentation of a petition from Bombay Association to Imperial Govt of India, and then separated from Sir Charles Wood. It offers science, commerce and arts courses and it has 549000 students in campuses and affiliated colleges as of 2013.
Faculty of Arts first department were established in 1835 at Elphinstone College and Faculty of Medicine in 1845 at Grant Medical College. Bachelor of Arts and Licentiate in Medicine first degrees awarded in 1862. Till the year 1904 the university only conduct exams, awarded affiliations to colleges, curricula developed and guidelines for colleges for developing curricula, from 1904 pg courses teaching departments started. After Independence in 1947 the powers and functions of university were recognized under Bombay University Act of 1953. The university name from University of Bombay to University of Mumbai changed in 1996.
